Sign up for a Qantas Pay card for the first time by 5 Aug 2025, spend AU$100 or more by 31 Aug 2025 and you’ll receive 1,000 bonus Qantas points.
Qantas Pay, formerly known as Qantas Travel Money or Qantas Cash, is the only prepaid debit card that allows you to earn Qantas points on a per dollar basis, albeit at a rather poor rate of 1x point per $4 spent (= 0.25x points per $1).
When you’re spending directly with Qantas (e.g. flights, Qantas Wine, Qantas Marketplace etc), you earn a more respectable 1.25x Qantas points per dollar spent.
The Qantas Pay card is sold as a great option for travel but it’s actually terrible because the exchange rate it uses is considerably worse than what is offered by the many debit and credit cards that charge no international fees.
That being said, the Qantas Pay card can be a decent option for those who are unable or unwilling to obtain a credit card – as long as you only use it within Australia, that is.
Recently, it seems they have made some substantial improvements to the Qantas Pay user experience as it now supports Apple Pay and Google Pay. Better yet, they also appear to have scrapped the fees for loading money instantly.
Even if you already have access to a better points earning credit card, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t also sign up for this and spend the $100 just for the 1,000 Qantas points.
Also, make sure to register for the competition they’re currently running before you start spending as it only takes a few seconds and you might just win some cash or a trip to Italy.
What are 1,000 Qantas points worth?
It depends how you redeem them:

It excludes people that have the old existing travel money card.
Can this card be used for everyday purchases like groceries? Or could I use this to buy a $100 Woolies gift card on Qantas marketplace and triple dip with points?
You can use it for basically anything. Woolworths or buying gift cards on Qantas Marketplace are perfectly normal uses.

Does applying for this card hit my credit score?
No. In Qantas’ own words:
Is this card available to non Australian citizens but permanent residents? When applying It required identity check via and the electoral enrolment details and one of a driver licence, or an Australian/Kiwi passport
Per this answer on their support page:
Thank you! I did not see this detail and I guess it is now too late as the offer expired yesterday, plus I am currently overseas.
This offer doesn’t end until 5 Aug 2025.
Thank you! I just realised too.
Thanks to this, my husband and I both signed up for Qantas pay and used more than AU$100 each so far.
Now I realised that he received ‘QANTAS PAY – SIGN UP BONUS POINTS +250’ but I have nothing.
This sounds different from ‘1,000 bonus Qantas points’ you mentioned above, do you know anything about it?
The offer is definitely for 1,000 points but the terms do state that they may take up to eight weeks to credit so it’s possible the 250 points he received has nothing to do with the 1,000 which may come later.
It states in the T&Cs that you need to spend $100 or more in any foreign currency. Has anyone spent in Australia and received the 1000 points?
It says you need to spend $100 or more of Australian Dollars OR equivalent in any foreign currency.
I hope your interpretation is correct. I think it is saying that you need to spend $100 AUD or equivalent “in any foreign currency” and that is why people are only getting the standard 250 points. I am keen to hear from anyone who spend in AUD and got the 1000 points.
I’m not sure where the 250 points are coming from but it doesn’t surprise me that no one has received the full 1,000 yet because the terms are clear that they will take six to eight weeks to credit.
As for the spend requirement, I am 100% certain you don’t need to use a foreign currency to qualify. On the competition page, for example, they state the following:
It looks like this promo has finished. While the ‘Italian getaway’ competition is still going, there is no mention of the 1,000 points for $100 spend on the landing page.
It’s still advertised on both the Qantas Pay website and the competition page.
1,000 point signup bonus still listed in the T&Cs on the homepage under point 21:
To earn 1,000 bonus Qantas Points, sign up for Qantas Pay for the first time between 28 May 2025 and 5 August 2025, and then add and spend $100 or more of Australian Dollars or equivalent in any foreign currency before 31 August 2025. New customers only. Offer excludes existing Qantas Travel Money card holders. Qantas Points will be credited to your account within six to eight weeks upon completion of the spend criteria. Offer may be extended or withdrawn at any time.
The Qantas Pay card can also be a good secondary way of getting Qantas points if you have an Amex and don’t want to get a second credit card for places that don’t accept Amex.
Can you explain how you fund the card using amex? Does this count as a cash advance?
