2,000 Flybuys points on Mastercard gift cards at Coles

Thanks to an anonymous source for letting us know about this promotion early.

For the first time since August, earn 2,000 bonus Flybuys points on $100 and $250 Coles Mastercard gift cards at Coles. These gift cards are great as they can be used basically anywhere Mastercard is accepted, both in-store and online.

Both the $100 and $250 Mastercards earn the same bonus of 2,000 points so you should just buy the $100 cards. Each one of those will incurs a $5 purchase fee but for that you’ll earn either $10.50 worth of Flybuys points or 1,050 Velocity points.

Here are the details:

  • Available from Wed 13 Nov to Tue 19 Nov 2024.
  • Only available in-store at Coles.
  • Limit of five gift cards per Flybuys account.
  • $5 purchase fee on $100 card, $7 fee on $250 card.
  • Excludes $50 Coles Mastercards.
  • This offer is open to everyone and does not require activation.

How it works

Present your Flybuys card or Coles barcode at the checkout when buying up to five of these $100 or $250 Coles Mastercards between 13 Nov and 19 Nov 2024 and you’ll earn 2,000 bonus points for each one you buy.

Unlike Woolworths, Coles don’t immediately credit you points so you usually have to wait until the next day at around 5pm before the points arrive in your account. Lately it’s not uncommon for the bonus points to lag behind by another day.

As mentioned above, I only recommend buying the $100 Mastercards as they earn the same 2,000 points bonus as the $250 cards. The $100 cards also have cheaper purchase fees ($5 as opposed to $7).

In addition to the 2,000 bonus points, you’ll receive 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent on the gift cards, meaning each $100 Mastercard will actually earn you 2,105 points because you’re paying $105 ($100 plus $5 purchase fee).

It’s important to remember that the purchase limit for this offer is just five cards per Flybuys account for the duration of the promotion – it’s not a per day limit. If you need more than five cards, you’ll need to use multiple Flybuys accounts.

It’s generally a good idea to use prepaid Mastercard and Visa gift cards as quickly as possible because if you leave them sitting idle for long periods, there’s a higher chance they might be compromised by criminals who brute force card number, expiry and CVV combinations until they find ones that work.

Additionally, whenever these Coles Mastercard promotions run there are always a handful of reports of being buying cards that have been tampered with. If you buy a Coles Mastercard and notice that it’s missing its CVV (security code) or card numbers then you should return it for a refund.

To use a Coles Mastercard gift card in-person, swipe it in the payment terminal, select Credit and then enter any four digit PIN. Whatever PIN you enter the first time becomes that card’s PIN for any subsequent transactions.

The balance check website for the Coles Mastercard gift cards is MyBalanceNow.com. If it keeps giving you errors, try using a different browser or device. If it still won’t work, call the number on the back of the card and use the automated phone balance check system.

Finally, these Mastercard gift card bonus points offers are always very popular so I’d recommend going to Coles first thing Wednesday morning to stand the best chance.

On top of the 2,000 bonus points you’ll also earn 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent.

    1. You would be better off using them to buy Airbnb gift cards at Coles and then adding those to your Airbnb account. Doing that would also see you earn an extra 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent.

      1. I went to Coles to buy Apple gift card last week but I didn’t earn 1 x point per dollar, plus extra 20 x points ( ex I bought $50 GC but only got 1000 Flybuys points) is there something wrong or they have changed the policy on earning points.

      2. If it’s a fixed bonus (e.g. 2,000 points like in this offer) then you earn the bonus points as well as the standard points. When it’s a multiplier offer (e.g. 20x points) you technically only earn 19x bonus points and 1x standard point.

  1. Good idea! Any hope of Airbnb coming up again this year for points? It’s been forever!

    1. I doubt it but you never know. It’s not entirely unheard of for a gift card to suddenly appear in one of these offers after years of not being seen.

You used to be able to buy Airbnb gift cards on Qantas Marketplace using Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards to earn an extra 3x Qantas points per dollar but that seems to have stopped working last month.

    1. Assuming it does still work and If you plan to buy 5 x $100 with the one $500 EFTPOS card you will have to cover the $5 card fees with the exact $25 change in cash.

      1. If you want to use a self-service checkout then yes, you’ll need exactly $25 in cash as they don’t accept split card payments for gift card purchases. Alternatively, you can just go through a staffed checkout and ask to pay $500 on one card and the remainder on another card. Most staff are usually happy to do this.

      2. Oh right I see, you have to put cash in first. (Normally if I’m using several cards and gift cards plus cash, I do all the cards first and then save 2 cents via cash rounding.)

    1. It worked last time. There are no guarantees with these sorts of things so be prepared in case it no longer works.

    2. I went to my local Woolies yesterday and used the Coles Mastercards to purchase the Apple Gift Cards [Variable loaded with $100] in the Woolies current bonus points promotion. I went through self-service checkout and bought a pkt of chips and a drink as well, then used the spilt payment card function. Paid $100 from the Coles Mastercard and paid the rest in cash, no problem. Worked like a treat!!! I was so chuffed it worked. Bonus points at both places. 🙂

    1. Yes, although some Coles staff may try to tell you that you can only buy five gift cards in which case you’ll have to either go back later or visit another store.

  2. Wednesday morning, checked my local Coles. Heaps of $250 cards, and not a single $100 card. Doesn’t look like they had them and sold out because can’t see any empty places. Looks like they didn’t stock the $100 to begin with.

  4. I had a very sweet Coels staff member come to me at the self serve checkout to approve the purchase of 3 x $100 cards and she said ‘Now excuse me, I have been told to ask all people who are purchasing multiple gift cards why they are buying them and then I also need to give you this flyer (Are you being scammed/Scam alert)’. She was very nice about it and said again ‘ I’m sorry I have to ask – it’s a new thing I need to do as part of my job’.

  5. Just fyi, I got some no issues this morning (13th) then went to buy some Apple Card’s at Woolworths but wouldn’t accept these cards to purchase. All good tho. 😎

  6. I had a store this morning where 1 card i took of the shelf (someone hid it behind other gift cards) tried to pay for it and it prompted for a refund which coles processed. They told me they took off all the gift cards this morning. Anyone got any insights?

    1. Did it offer you for a refund when you scanned it? Today, the checkout guy told me “no refunds” on these cards. His colleague said the same thing to me again at the end of my transaction. It was a bit bizarre. I thought maybe they were trying to cover themselves in case the cards were tampered with

They’re not allowed to do that. Under Australian law you are entitled to a refund or replacement if you buy a faulty or tampered gift card.

      2. ask for a manager – Ive been told that before, then got the manager and they processed my refund

  7. Do we need to scan the gift card one by one in order to get multiple 2000 points? If we pay 5 gift cards at once, do we only receive 2000 points?

    Reply

    1. It doesn’t matter whether you buy them individually or together as long as you don’t buy more than five with the one Flybuys account.

  8. Has the bonus points landed for you guys? Made the purchase yesterday, got the regular points today, don’t see the bonus points in my account.
