10x Everyday Rewards points on Activ Visa gift cards at Woolworths

Earn 10x Everyday Rewards points per dollar spent on selected denominations of Activ Visa Green, Birthday, Congrats, Online Shopping, Luxury, Travel & Explore, Pets & Vets, Petrol & Auto and Gaming gift cards at Woolworths. This promotion is valid from Wed 1 Nov to Tue 7 Nov 2023 and is only available in-store at Woolworths and Woolworths Metro locations.

For gift cards with fixed values (e.g. “$50”, “$100”), the limit is five cards per day which can be purchased across multiple transactions. For variable load gift cards (e.g. “$50-500”), the limit is two cards per day which must be purchased in a single transaction each day.

This promotion is a little bit complicated so here’s our guide to make heads or tails of it:

As you can see, the variable load Activ Visa Online Shopping, Luxury, Travel & Explore, Petrol & Auto and Gaming cards are the best cards to buy in this promotion as you can load up to $500 on each of these cards and use them essentially wherever Visa is accepted (there are a small number of exclusions such as gambling, ATMs, the ATO etc).

Whilst these particular cards have $7.95 purchase fees, the points you earn more than offset this cost. For example, if you buy 2x $500 cards you will essentially be paying $15.90 in fees to earn either 5,000 Qantas points or $50 in Everyday Rewards Dollars, depending on what you’ve selected as your reward choice.

Considering that 5,000 Qantas points can be worth several hundred dollars if used towards reward flights, this promotion offers a highly cost effective way of buying points.

The fixed value $50 and $100 Activ Visa cards are best avoided as they earn far fewer points for only a modest reduction in the purchase fee price. The Pets & Vets card has no purchase fee but can only be used at pet shops and vet clinics so it would only be suitable to those planning purchases of that sort.

If the checkout won’t let you buy two $500 gift cards in one transaction, try loading one of the cards with $499 as there is often a $1,000 limit on gift card purchases. Alternatively, you may able to convince a manager or supervisor to override this limit.

Update: A number of people have reported receiving tampered Activ Visa gift cards from Woolworths. If your gift card has already had its PIN and CVV revealed or the front of the card has had some of its numbers scratched off, it is likely that you card has been tampered with. Check your gift cards before leaving the store and if you notice that some have been tampered with, insist that you are refunded.

How many points will I earn?

Where can these gift cards be used?

Activ Visa Prepaid, Birthday, Congrats, Online Shopping, Luxury, Travel & Explore, Petrol & Auto and Gaming gift cards can be used anywhere that Visa is accepted, both in-store and online.

Activ Pets & Vets gift cards can be only be used at Veterinary Services (0742), Farm Management Services (0763), Pet Shop, Pet Foods, Supplies Stores (5995) & Pet Insurance (single purchase, not available for installment/recurring payments) (6300).

  1. Just thought I’d let you know you’ve made a mistake – you’ve listed pets and vets in the cards that can be used anywhere (as well as listing separately). Love your website!

    1. Thanks. Which category the Pets & Vets card falls into is actually something of a mystery as they recently started selling it as a card that can be used anywhere. Whether this change extends to existing cards remains unknown, but I would caution anyone against buying that card unless they plan to use it at a pet shop or vet.

      Reply

    1. Yes, that should be possible as the card states that it “can be used where Visa Prepaid gift cards are accepted and is not limited for use at selected merchants.”

  2. Ok I think I’ve read this too many times but do I have this wrong – is there anything saying we cannot buy variables on the same day as fixed?

    Reply

    1. The limits should be treated separately meaning you should be able to buy five fixed and two variables on the same day.

  3. Thanks for the guide. Do you think I can use AMEX to buy/load these cards and double dip on Qantas points?

  4. I don’t think you can use these cards everywhere . I reckon they blocked in Coles and woolies . I’m pretty sure you can only use them at the places it states. I went to use a him card at officeworks and it got declined

It sounds like you used a TCN Him or Ultimate Him card which only work with the retailers that have partnered with the companies that operate those gift cards. With the exception of the Pets & Vets card, all of the Activ Visa gift cards in this promotion can basically be used anywhere that Visa is accepted.

As a rule of thumb, if a gift card has a purchase fee (like these cards do), then you should be able to use it more or less anywhere. If a gift card doesn’t have a fee, then it is almost certainly restricted to specific retailers (e.g. the TCN and Ultimate cards) or merchant categories (e.g. the Pets & Vets card).

  5. Sorry I forgot to add that you can NOT buy one card for $500 and the other card for $499 either and no manager can override IT

    1. It was absolutely possible to circumvent the $1,000 checkout limit by loading one of two cards with $499 as recently as a few weeks ago. Do you have any reason to suspect that this is no longer the case?

      Reply

      1. Oddly, the checkout limit seems to only apply to the spendable amounts on the gift cards. The activation fees and any other items you are purchasing in the same transaction are ostensibly counted separately.

When Woolworths was offering 10x points on Eftpos gift cards last month, half a dozen people told me that they weren’t able to add 2x $500 cards but could add 1x $500 and 1x $499 despite the purchase fees still bringing the transaction total over $1,000 in both cases.

      2. Sean you seem to not have any practical experience with these cards. Better not “assume” things before making valid attempts.

      3. The check out girl at Woolies loaded $500 on one card and $499.99 on the other, and the total came to $1015.89 for me, and my points landed to my Qantas straight away after it was activated.

  6. Can I use these gift cards to pay council rates, utilities and taxes? Are they easily hacked like the Mastercard gift cards from Coles? Thanks

    1. Can I use these gift cards to pay council rates, utilities and taxes?

Payments to the ATO definitely aren’t permitted but for the others it may be possible depending on how they process the payments (some may reject prepaid gift cards). I would suggest that you buy one card to begin with and use that to see what works before committing to buying more.

Are they easily hacked like the Mastercard gift cards from Coles?

All prepaid Visa and Mastercard gift cards are susceptible to BIN attacks. It’s always a good idea to use them as quickly as you can, even if the chances of your cards being compromised are very low.

  7. Will I be able to buy 2 variable load cards on one day, and 2 another day for the same Everyday Rewards account?

    Reply

    1. Yes, the limits are per day. Provided there were enough cards in stock and you were willing to buy two cards every day, you could theoretically buy a total of fourteen cards with a single Everyday Rewards account over the course of the promotion.

      1. Anyone received the points yet? I bought in a transaction with other items. Got those reawrd points already but not for the activ card.

  8. Dear Editor, could you please clarify which cards are specifically excluded from this promotion such that I don’t mistakenly pick up the wrong one.

The list says: Green, Balloons, Fashion, Flowers, Night Out and Tradie & DIY

Isn’t the Green one also pictured in the flyer? Other than that I’ve spotted the Fashion [PINK], Night Out [Black], Tradie [Dark Green with drill pictured], Flowers [brown – but this is eGift only I suppose so not a reason to worry?], Balloons [Sky Blue – with the balloon lol], Green [is the same one as pictured]?

    Reply

    1. Basically, you only want to buy the variable load versions of the five cards that appear in the top row of this image.

Isn’t the Green one also pictured in the flyer?

Yes. That’s because the terms only exclude the variable load version of that card. The fixed value $50 and $100 Prepaid Green cards are included (but offer poor value so are best avoided).

      1. Thanks Editor, that infographic is really appreciated. Referred to that extensively on Day1 (Wed) to sort out the cards and now I’ve bought them daily and intend to go all 7 days on my EDR card.

I’ve been buying the Coles ones in abundance, but this one isn’t as profitable but definitely has some profit so buying them. Its my first time buying the Activ VISA cards from Woolies and the way Woolies has set which cards qualify and which don’t absolutely made no sense to me! I thank FreePoints and the fam at OzB as I would have otherwise bought the Green variable load ones looking at Woolies flyer and lost $16+ on Day1.

    1. Update: I can confirm that these Activ Visa cards can definitely be used to buy the Apple gift cards that earn 20x Flybuys points this week.

If you do plan to try using these gift cards to buy other gift cards, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

      1. It is unlikely that you would be able to use them to buy other prepaid Visa/Eftpos/Mastercard gift cards or any of the gift cards issued by Coles and Woolworths themselves.

      2. Activ Visa gift cards limit how much you can spend at supermarkets. If you try to spend more than $400 at Coles or Woolworths with one of these cards in one day, it’ll be rejected.

For more information on both of these points, I would suggest you have a look at the comprehensive Gift Card FAQ on OzBargain.

    2. My friend confirmed she used the Petrol and Auto card to buy Apple Gift card promo currently running at Coles and it worked !

      Reply

    1. I would assume so, either directly or via PayPal. However, the issue with using prepaid gift cards for online purchases is that you’re rarely given the option to do split payments like you can do for in-store purchases. If you can’t do split payments, then you would have to ensure that the amount on the gift card is equal to or greater than the amount you’re trying to spend.

      Reply

  9. I tried buying a $500 apple gift card with a $500 luxury travel black active Visa card and it got declined multiple times. I then tried to buy $1000 apple gift card and split the payment and it still got declined from the customer service manger.

    Reply

    1. I tried buying a $500 apple gift card

Ah, that would be the problem. As I mentioned in my comment above, the Activ Visa gift cards have a bizarre, unpublicised restriction that prohibits you from spending more than $400 in one day at supermarkets:

No more than $400 can redeemed from a specific gift card across any supermarkets in a calendar day.

If one gift card is successfully redeemed at a given store, a second gift card can only be redeemed at the same store within the next approximately ten minutes if the amount redeemed from the second gift card would see the total amount redeemed stay below $400. This restriction is applied even if attempting another redemption through a different EFTPOS terminal at the same store.

This was discovered by users on OzBargain. You can read more about it here.

Try again with a smaller amount and see how you go.

      1. I read this
“Update: I can confirm that these Activ Visa cards can definitely be used to buy the Apple gift cards that earn 20x Flybuys points this week.”
So now you’re saying that the amount has to be under $400. So if I buy five $2000 I have to split the payment $400 each time 5 times ?? Im confused

        Reply

      2. Correct, you have to ensure that you never spend more than $400 per card per day and, after using each card, you must wait at least ten minutes before trying another.

        Reply

  10. So am I suppose to buy $2000 apple gift cards in one transaction pay $400 on one card and then wait at least ten mins to use the next card ? The register will shut down or time out.

    Reply

      1. No you can not do that either. I brought a gift card for $400 using the activ card. Then I went to buy another one for $400 and it got declined.

        Reply

  11. Yes I waited ten mins and then $400 got declined and then $350 got declined but $150 got approved . This isn’t really what I brought these cards for . I assumed you could use them as much as you wanted anytime. Big waste of money

    1. No wonder given you don’t seem to have the capability to think or process information correctly. I feel sorry for the editor that they had to waste time replying all your rubbish comments.

  12. Yes you’re right sir. Buy these gift cards and you can use them to buy Apple Card’s at Coles. BUT you can’t use all of the card only some of the card. BUT you can’t buy them all at once you have to pay separately. AND you have to wait ten mins or is it you have to buy it within ten mins. AND you can’t use the same card once you have used it once. Let’s take a look at that !
If one gift card is successfully redeemed at a given store, a second gift card can only be redeemed at the same store within the next approximately ten minutes .
This information now says WITHIN the next ten mins yet I’m being told wait ten mins. All

  13. Sorry if this has been answered or a silly question but I need it spelling out 😂…
If you buy a gift card with an offer for 20x Points and then use that gift card to buy another gift card with 20x points will that work?
Can you do it one transaction after another or is there an amount of time you have to wait?
Only just starting out on this gift card point frenzy journey…

    Reply

    1. Unfortunately, you can’t really do that. As mentioned in comments above, you can buy these Activ Visa gift cards at Woolworths and earn 10x points and then take them to Coles to buy the Apple gift cards and earn 20x points there as well (subject to limitations). You could also buy some of these Activ Visa cards and then use them in a future 20x points promotion at Woolworths (provided they don’t close that loophole before then).

However, you can’t just buy an Activ Visa card and then use that to buy another Activ Visa card at Woolworths. In the past, this was certainly possible but not anymore.

  14. I just purchased 2x Activ green cards at Woolies. I asked ‘just checking my reward card registered’ before I paid and she said ‘yes but you don’t get the points, the person who spends the voucher does’ – first time gift card buyer… did I miss something or is that incorrect?!?

    Reply

    1. That’s incorrect. Take everything in-store staff tell you about gift cards with a grain of salt as they often don’t know what they’re talking about.

If you scanned your Everyday Rewards card, you should see the points you earned on your activity page as well as on the receipt given to you.

      Reply

    2. @Rose, because you were trying to buy 2, may I assume that you were buying the variable load cards? If so, you will not collect any points for Green variable load cards, and you’ll need to buy either the Online shopping, luxury, travel, petrol, or gaming card.

For your reference, see below in order for [card value, fees, Woolies reward $, gain/loss]

      1. $50 –> 5.95 –> 2.50 –> $3.45 LOSS
      2. $100 –> 5.95 –> 5.00 –> $0.95 LOSS
      3. $500 –> 7.95 –> 25.00 –> $17.05 PROFIT

As such, unless you get better value from Qantas points, kindly don’t buy any fixed denomination cards and avoid the Green one too.

  15. Is there any limit on the the number of variable limit cards each everyday rewards member can buy?
I just purchased 2x today in the same transaction ($500 & $499) and got 0 points.
    Anyone experience the same issue?

    Reply

      1. Nevermind, the points are showing now (1 hour after purchase). Usually, it’s instant and I get a message on the checkout screen confirming the points earned before purchasing which I didn’t get this time for some reason.
        Thanks for the support anyway.
